The right rug can perfectly finish a room, tying your whole look together. Often overlooked, there are a few important details to bear in mind when choosing the right rug for your living room. Not only should the colour of the rug fit in with the décor of the room; the size, shape and texture are also crucial to finding the correct rug.
A rug can be a wonderful, big impact piece. It can be one of the key focal points in your living room design. Trying to find a rug to fit the room once it’s finished can often be a challenge. That’s why we’ve created this quick guide to help you find the perfect rug for your lounge. If you are starting from scratch and have a colour palette in mind we can try and find rugs to compliment your colour palette.
Choosing a rug that’s too small will actually make your room look smaller. You should start by thinking about what you want to achieve with your chosen rug. Do you want to define a separate seating area or dining area or do you want your rug to be a centre piece to the room?
To define a conversational area, the rug should be at least large enough to accommodate the front legs of the sofa or armchairs surrounding it. Ideally, the whole chair will fit on the rug. A dining table rug should be large enough for the chairs to sit on the rug when pulled back.
If you want to add cosiness to a cold room, try using an extra large rug as a carpet. A general rule of thumb for choosing a living room rug size is to keep it to a minimum of six feet and no more than two feet from the wall.
Rug is too small…
Rug is the right size…
Take a critical look at your living room. Does it have a lot of different colours or patterns, or is it quite neutral? If your room is already full of pattern and colour, it’s best to stick to single shades that compliment your existing furniture. You don’t want your new rug to be competing for attention in an already busy colour scheme. On the other hand, a brightly patterned rug can lift an uninspiring living room. Also, pay attention to the colours of your flooring and walls as this can dictate what colour rug you should choose.
The shape of the rug will depend on the overall style of the room. Square or rectangle rugs work well with traditional or minimalist décor and can perfectly define a seating area. A round rug can look stunning with a contemporary or mid-century styled room.
Whatever shape you choose, make sure that it’s big enough for all the large pieces of furniture to touch it. Circular rugs also work beautifully under round or curved furniture. If you have a dual-purpose living room with a dining table, rugs can be used to create separate areas in the room. It’s perfectly fine to use a mixture of round rugs in the same room.
The texture of the rug is probably the least considered design element. Choosing different textures for a room can create a richness and depth to your style. Consider the other furniture in the room and try to choose a contrasting texture for your rug.
If your sofa is sleek leather, try matching it will a fluffy or shaggy pile rug. It’s also important to consider who will be using the room. If you have young kids, you’ll need something easy to clean.
Have you already bought the wrong rug? Don’t worry. Try layering the rug with a neutral under rug, this is great for rugs that are too small, but perfect in every other way.
